Pack And Play Weight Limit Parental Guide
Pack n plays are some of the most useful utilities in your parental arsenal. Taking on not two, but three potential key roles for you and your child, many see it as a must-have.
Bassinet, travel crib, and playard all rolled up into one, this single product can keep your child safely entertained and rested for a long time… but not forever.
Our kids are constantly growing, getting heavier and heavier along the way (as indicated by that pain in your back), and eventually, they become too heavy for a pack n play to support safely, meaning the time has come for them to make the crib or bed transition.
The question is… how heavy can a child be before they have to make the switch? Well, to ensure my daughter’s safety, I researched a number of pack n plays from some of the leading brands and some of the not-so-leading brands to drum up an answer.
Read on to be sure your child’s safe sleep and play space remains just that… safe!
Pack And Play Weight Bearing Capacity
As you might guess, the weight bearing capacity of pack n plays varies from design to design, so the only way to really know when you should stop using yours is to check the user manual, or failing that, the manufacturer’s website.
However, generally speaking, you can expect most pack n plays to be able to support between 25 and 35 lbs.
That’s not to say there aren’t any options outside this range, because there are, in both directions, but they’re few and far between.
My Baby’s Pack And Play
In our minds, the whole point of buying a pack n play was to save money, so my partner and I opted for this reasonably priced Pamo Babe design.
It’s super compact and easy to travel with, yet gives our daughter plenty of wiggle room for sleeping and playing when set up.
The mesh sides offer great visuals at all times and guarantee a strong airflow to aid the breathing of delicate little lungs.
On the weight limit side of things, it’s suitable for children up to 33 lbs, so it falls right into that average range discussed above.
How Old Will A Child Be When They Reach The Average Weight Bearing Range Of A Pack And Play?
All children are unique, so it’s impossible to give the exact age that they’ll reach or exceed the average pack n play weight bearing capacity; however,
I can once again give you some generalities to use as a reference.
Typically, children will reach between 25 and 35 lbs between 2 and 3 years of age, but it’s important to have your child weighed semi-frequently so you can track their unique progress and make the change to a new sleeping space when necessary.
Your baby may well hit 25 lbs after just one year, and 30 lbs after just 1.5 years, so it’s crucial to stay in the know regarding your child’s development.
Pack And Plays That Go Above & Beyond The Average Weight Bearing Capacity
If you want a future-proof pack n play, you’ll need to fork out a bit extra for a premium model. Here are the best I came across during my research:
Graco Pack ‘n’ Play Day2Dream

My friends actually have this Swiss army knife of a pack n play, so I got to do some hands-on testing, and it really is quite fantastic.
Arriving with a diaper changer and a portable bassinet, it’s designed with parent convenience in mind.
There are six different ways to use this pack n play, and it folds down into a tiny little tote bag for easy, single-handed transportation, freeing up your other hand to hold your little one or push them in their stroller.
What’s more, this reinforced structure can accommodate children up to weights ever so slightly over 44 lbs, which is mighty impressive, so, in theory, my friends’ child can use it up until they’re 6 years old.
Graco Pack ‘n’ Play Dome LX

Another parent friend turned me onto the Dome LX, also from Graco.
This one doesn’t have quite as many utilities, amounting to a lower price tag — Woo! Yet it’s even more structurally sound than the premium Day2Dream option.
The Dome LX will accommodate children up to 50 lbs, meaning it could serve as a child’s safe sleep space until they’re between 6 and 7.
After hearing about this, I went to check one out in-store wondering if it might be easier for us to upgrade to this one rather than purchase a crib or toddler bed for my daughter.
Everything looked great and it was incredibly sturdy, but my partner decided it would be nicer to bite the bullet and get a crib to establish a classic nursery aesthetic in our daughter’s room.
Frequently Asked Questions
My Child Is Above The Weight Bearing Capacity Of Their Pack And Play And Nothing Has Happened. Should They Carry On Using It?
Pack n plays aren’t likely to fall to pieces the moment your child reaches the maximum weight limit, but that doesn’t mean you should allow them to continue using it.
The weight bearing capacity tells you how much weight the structure can hold indefinitely.
Once an infant breaches this limit, they’re putting enough strain on the structure that it will no longer be able to support them indefinitely, meaning the longer they stay in there, the higher the chances something will go wrong.
It can be tricky transitioning your child to a new safe sleep or play space, but it’s important to their health and safety that we cater to their development, especially where sleep is concerned.
Final Thoughts
There you have it — Generally speaking, pack n play weight limits fall between 25 and 35 lbs, but there are outliers.
If you want your baby to remain safe in their pack n play for as long as possible, premium options go up to 50 lbs, but they can cost a pretty penny.
If you have a lower budget for your pack n play, chances are it will fall pretty low on the average weight limit range or possibly even below it, so, the best advice I can give you is to always check weight bearing capacity before you buy.
That way, you’ll know exactly when to move your child onto their next safe sleep space, thus ensuring their health as they grow.
