Grow Your Own Garlic to Use as a Natural Remedy

June 9, 2020 by Angela Paris Leave a Comment

Garlic is a perfect addition to many meals, but did you know that it’s packed with essential nutrients that are behind his medicinal properties? Rich in flavonoids, amino acids, polysaccharides, and sulfur, garlic is a potent natural remedy against a variety of diseases and conditions.

It was used as the base for numerous remedies in the past thanks to the presence of yet another powerful compound – allicin. Studies have confirmed that allicin can do wonders against high blood pressure and cardiovascular problems, preventing atherosclerosis and a variety of other problems.

While research on garlic’s properties against cardiovascular problems has still not moved beyond theory, garlic has proven itself a powerful weapon against colds and the flu. You can easily prepare a garlic remedy and take it every day to boost your immune system and keep respiratory infections at bay.

Thanks to the presence of antioxidants, garlic may help against dementia and Alzheimer’s disease and boost your physical performance. You won’t get all of this, however, by buying garlic from the store. The good news is that you can grow your own batch of garlic that you can later use as a natural remedy.

How to Grow Garlic at Home

Garlic should be planted in a sunny spot in your garden. You’ll need to make compost of tea mixed with 5-10-10 NPK fertilizer for the soil. Take a garlic bulb and break up the cloves, then plant them into the soil 4-6 inches apart. Cover them with an inch or two of soil, with 5-6 inches of mulch.

Water your garlic when the topsoil is dry and not before. A low-decomposing compost is needed twice a month, and a high-nitrogen fertilizer is required once. Cut off any weeds or flowers to prevent the garlic’s slow growth.

You should see the first sprouts in 3 months.

June 10, 2020 by Angela Paris Leave a Comment

Do you know what Brussels sprouts are? No, it’s not a Belgian dessert. A cruciferous veggie that looks like a tiny cabbage, Brussels sprouts are full of essential nutrients and extremely low on calories.

They contain fiber, carbs, protein, vitamins A, C, and K, folate, manganese, etc. The list goes on and on. In fact, Brussels sprouts are among the healthiest cruciferous veggies you can eat and they’re quite cheap as well.

The taste might not be for everyone, but if you know how to prepare them right, you’ll definitely make them a part of your diet. Well, we have a recipe for caramelized Brussels sprouts you should try. It’s the most delicious recipe with this veggie and one you’ll fall in love with.

Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Garlic

Ingredients

  • 1 pound Brussels sprouts
  • 5 garlic cloves
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 4-6 tablespoons olive oil (extra-virgin)
  • Salt and pepper

Preparation

Preheat the oven at 400 degrees, then trim the Brussels sprouts at the bottom and cut them in half. Place them in the pan cut side down, then season them and add the garlic in as well. Cook until they brown, then roast on high heat while shaking the pan.

It’ll take 10-20 minutes before they’re done. In the end, serve them with sprinkled balsamic vinegar on top and enjoy!

Homemade Italian Garlic & Herb Mix

I’m in love with making my own seasoning blends.  It is just so much less expensive than store-bought alternatives, and you know exactly what you’re putting into it. The best part of all is that it only takes a few minutes to put together! First, purchase your seasonings in bulk. I get mine through Amazon Subscribe and Save because I love the value and convenience. All of the ingredients needed from the parsley to the onion powder and granulated garlic are available online.

Make your own DIY Italian Garlic & Herb Seasoning for a fraction of the cost of a store-bought blend. It's great to have in your pantry, and makes a lovely gift, too!

This DIY Italian Garlic & Herb Seasoning makes quite a bit – about 5-1/2 cups – but it keeps for 6-9 months. I like to use small canning jars to store my seasoning blends. You can divide it up and give some as a gift. It’s a lovely addition to a homemade gift basket of goodies for a housewarming or the holidays.

There’s really nothing to this recipe, it’s as easy as can be.  In fact, my 4-year-old daughter helped me to make this batch. She loves helping to mix anything, and the idea of adding a bunch of dry items makes it all the better since she knows she doesn’t have to worry about splashing. However, you do need to take care mixing the onion powder in so you don’t end up with a big seasoning cloud in your face!
