Sunshine Printable

Sunshine Printable by Riggstown Road for Busy Mom's Helper

Need a little sunshine?

I’ve got some for you today in the form of a free SUNSHINE PRINTABLE! 🙂

Sunshine Printable by Riggstown Road for Busy Mom's HelperLynn here, from Riggstown Road, and nothing motivates me more than sunshine. Whether I’m doing  house work, yard work, or school work, it just makes everything a little happier, ya know?

Speaking of school work, I teach my children at home, and they luuuuuv art projects.  I decided I wanted to do a project with them and share it with you.  I told the girls I wanted a painting of sunshine and asked for a volunteer.  Taking the paint out equals immediate interest. 😉

Sunshine Printable by Riggstown Road for Busy Mom's Helper

My daughter, Elizabeth, chose to do this project and she painted the brightest, happiest sunshine I’ve ever seen, using her choice of colors and style, and I LOVE how it turned out.  (In her words, it had to be perfectly imperfect.  Wonder where she gets ideas like that?) I took the simple little painting and added some simple little words to it and created this printable art.

Sunshine Printable by Riggstown Road for Busy Mom's HelperI love how it’s something we did together.  And I love that it’s sunshine.  Didn’t I mention that I am partial to sunshine?  And, just like the real thing, I love how this printable version can brighten your day by brightening your space.  Add it to your spring vignettes, or hang it on your own little “sunshine’s” wall.  You’re sure to smile every time you look at it…at least I do. 🙂 I like the white space, but if you trim it off, the graphic is designed to fit nicely into a 5×7 frame.  Perfect for someone’s desktop!

(*Printable is for personal use only.)

Be sure to share where you plan to add our little bit of sunshine to your home.  My students would love to know!  And if you’re feeling inspired, pull out the paints and create some one-of-a-kind artwork with your little artists. 😉

Wall Texturing

December 23, 2020 by Kathleen Clegg

Wall Texturing

I’ve talked about my house before and how we moved back into it after three years away and how we are making some updates to the house. One of the things about moving back into this house is that we are moving in with fewer family members, so we have extra rooms. I decided that I wanted to make one of the extra upstairs bedrooms my craft room, which is so awesome, but was going to take some work. It had been occupied by both my youngest child and my grandsons.  One of the walls had a lot of issues, so my husband and I decided to try our hand at Wall Texturing. Actually, he already knew what he was doing, I had no clue.

Stenciled Tables

Stenciled Tables

Have you ever started on a project, got part of the way through it and decided that you wanted to go a completely different direction? This is that project for me. I bought these two tables for really great prices and thought I might fix them up and sell them for lots more than the price I paid. Today I am going to tell you about my Stenciled Tables, how I stencil and the outcome of said tables. They look nothing like they did when I bought them, that’s for sure.

Ceiling Fan Update

January 1, 2016 by Kathleen Clegg

Ceiling Fan Update

Do you have ceiling fans in your house? When you’re watching those home improvement shows, they always say that you should take down your ceiling fans because they are “so last year”. Well, we have five of them in our house, all upstairs, and I’m not taking them down. Today I’m here to show you how you can do your own Ceiling Fan Update, with minimal heartache.

Where we live, most people don’t have air conditioners, including us. There isn’t really a need. We have a free standing air conditioner and it was only one about two days this summer. However, the fans are a must to keep the air moving. When we moved back into our house, I decided they needed an update. Actually, my good friend Lisa, who happens to be an interior designer, told me they needed an update. So, I did what she said and they looks so much better.

Tin Pumpcans

January 9, 2016 by Lynn Driver

Tin Pumpcans by Riggstown Road for Busy Mom's Helper

Yes, I know I spelled it wrong.  I couldn’t resist.  And even though it’s not official on the calendar yet, I have to say it:  Happy Fall Y’all!  I’m kicking off the season with these DIY TIN PUMPCANS.Tin Pumpcans by RiggstownRoad for Busy Mom's Helper

I’m Lynn, and I’m excited to be visiting from Riggstown Road with a fun little fall project.  I’m a busy mom, and a thrifty one, too, so I love how this décor only took about five minutes and was virtually free!  If you have any canned food in your pantry, you have just about all you need to make some cute Tin Pumpcans.

I got to thinking the other day, how a tin can would make a cute, rustic pumpkin.  I thought I’d paint it orange, since I love orange pumpkins and fall colors in all their glory {#fallismyfavorite} but then I realized that (1) a creamy neutral color would add a touch of sophistication, (2) it would look good with my neutral color scheme, and (3) I already had a can of ivory spray paint.

I went outside and found some nice, round sticks to use for the stalks.  I broke them to get the length I wanted.  I already had a bag of moss in my craft stash.

I wanted a large pumpkin, so I bought the biggest can of vegetables I could find… 6 lb. 10 oz.   (If you’re not ready to use this much corn or beans at once, transfer them to a freezer bag, and save for later.)  I also used a smaller can I had on hand for a small pumpkin.

Total cost: $0 !!!  OK, I did buy the big can of corn.  But.  I figure that I bought the corn, which we will eat, and I got the can it was in for free. 😉Tin Pumpcans by Riggstown Road for Busy Mom's HelperSUPPLIES

  • Tin cans with lids
  • Spray paint
  • Moss
  • Small sticks
  • Hot glue gun (and glue sticks)

DIRECTIONS

  1. Open cans using a can opener that will leave SMOOTH edges.  (I use a hand-held Pampered Chef can opener.)  Set contents aside.
  2. Remove label; wash and dry can and lid.
  3. Paint the can and lid and allow to dry.
  4. Use hot glue to add moss to lid, leaving an empty spot for stalk.
  5. Add glue to center of lid, and press stick firmly into glue, continuing to press for a minute or so.
  6. Place lids back on cans, and you’ve got pumpkins!

Tin Pumpcans by Riggstown Road for Busy Mom's Helper

Arrange on a tray with the rest of the moss, and you’ve got an instant fall centerpiece!

Tin Pumpcans by Riggstown Road for Busy Mom's Helper

What better way to use the cans from all that veggie soup you’re going to making on these chilly fall days?

And shhh, don’t tell the kids, but the inside makes a perfect place to store fall treats.  😉

DIY Coat Rack

DIY Coat Rack

Hello. It’s Kathleen again, from Fearlessly Creative Mammas, to bring you a really great DIY Coat Rack. A little over three years ago my husband, youngest daughter and I moved to China for a year and then to Korea for a few months. We decided to rent our house out to our oldest daughter and her family while we were gone and they made some changes that were awesome for their family, mainly because they are younger and younger people’s tastes are different than older people’s taste. Yes, I am the older person in this story.  [Read more…]

Family Moments with DIY Frozen Shirts

April 26, 2015 by Kelly Dedeaux

DIY Frozen Shirts / by Busy Mom's Helper #SouperPower #CleverGirls #

With our lives being so busy, we make it a priority to ‘freeze’ for some quality, family time. We love doing fun projects together, especially when it’s themed after some of our favorite things…like Disney movies! Last weekend we loved spending time together creating these fabulous DIY Frozen Shirts as a family.

DIY Frozen Shirts / by Busy Mom's Helper #SouperPower #CleverGirls

We thought it would be a lot of fun, when our shirts were dried and able to be worn, to not only WEAR some Disney Frozen fun…but also to EAT some! My kiddos were so excited that Campbell Soup Company has introduced a new label for its popular Campbell’s® Condensed Soup. It now features Anna and Elsa – some of our family’s favorites! Priced at $1.79 per 10.5 oz. can, they’re available now in the soup aisle of grocery retailers and wholesale clubs nationwide!

DIY Frozen Shirts / by Busy Mom's Helper #SouperPower #CleverGirls #

With every delish, warm bite, we had fun naming the shapes of the Disney Princesses, a castle…even a carriage and more. It sparked some really fun conversations about great family memories with our beloved movies and characters, making our meal time all the more fabulous!

DIY Frozen Shirts / by Busy Mom's Helper #SouperPower #CleverGirls #

Let’s get on with our Frozen Shirts, shall we?

Supplies

  • Shirts of Choice
  • Cardboard
  • Stencils – Download Page 1 and Page 2 here to print
  • Paint/brushes

Directions

  1. Print off the stencils above. Trace onto cardstock or wax paper (I prefer wax paper because it sticks a bit to the shirt, making the edges nicer). DIY Frozen Shirts / by Busy Mom's Helper #SouperPower #CleverGirls # DIY Frozen Shirts / by Busy Mom's Helper #SouperPower #CleverGirls #
  2. Place a piece of cardboard under where you’ll be painting. This will prevent the paint from soaking through to the other side of your shirt. Place your Frozen silhouette where you want it on your shirt. DIY Frozen Shirts / by Busy Mom's Helper #SouperPower #CleverGirls #
  3. Carefully dab paint around the stencil. Decorate around with other colors and designs, if you wish! DIY Frozen Shirts / by Busy Mom's Helper #SouperPower #CleverGirls #
  4. Peel up the stencil and allow your shirt to fully dry. DIY Frozen Shirts / by Busy Mom's Helper #SouperPower #CleverGirls #

That’s it! Now you can show off your Frozen-lovin’ with these awesome shirts! The kids had so much fun decorating it themselves (with a little supervision, of course).

Which character would YOU choose for your awesome Frozen Shirt?

DIY Peter Pan’s Shadow Nightlight

Do your kids still prefer a little light as they sleep, or even just as they’re falling asleep? Mine do, but most lamps are pretty boring! I decided to add some fun into their room with this DIY Peter Pan’s Shadow Nightlight makeover! Plus – a GIVEAWAY! We all love those, right?!

It’s been about a year since I remodeled the boys’ bedroom into a Pirate theme, so it’s about time I did something about their nightlight! With the whole Neverland/pirate thing going on, I couldn’t think of anything more appropriate than Peter Pan’s shadow hanging out on their wall!

DIY Peter Pan's Shadow Nightlight / by Busy Mom's Helper #SleepAligned #Ad

Supplies

  • Projector
  • Peter Pan Silhouette
  • Marker for tracing
  • Paint (grey) and brush
  • Lamp
  • GE Align™ PM LED Light Bulb

DIY Peter Pan's Shadow Nightlight / by Busy Mom's Helper #SleepAligned #Ad

Ever since we started using this new light bulb, the kids have seemed to have an easier time falling asleep at night. I think it’s because the NEW GE Align™ PM LED Light Bulb helps to promote the body’s natural sleep cycle by producing a low amount of blue light versus an ordinary light bulb, causing the body to produce more melatonin (sleep hormone).

Since I love using Amazon.com for as much of my shopping as possible, I ordered it right from there using my Prime membership! You can find it on Amazon.com right HERE. If you haven’t used Amazon.com before, you definitely should because it’s AWESOME! They have practically everything, great prices, and I can order it right from my house (in my yoga pants, if I want) and it ships super quick.

GE Light Store

Directions

  1. Cut out your Peter Pan Silhouette, and place it on your projector. Since I wanted my shadow up along the top of the wall and ceiling, I had to prop it up a bit. (I used their Pirate Treasure Chest to prevent it from tipping OVER).  DIY Peter Pan's Shadow Nightlight / by Busy Mom's Helper #SleepAligned #Ad This is what this section looked like before…..GE Light
  2. Use your marker to trace the outline of the shadow on your wall/ceiling. I used a grey one so it would blend in with the paint best, and not have funny edges. DIY Peter Pan's Shadow Nightlight / by Busy Mom's Helper #SleepAligned #Ad
  3. Once you’ve got your full outline done, paint it in! I did a grey color, like a shadow. DIY Peter Pan's Shadow Nightlight / by Busy Mom's Helper #SleepAligned #Ad
  4. Once it’s dry, you’re good to go!

DIY Peter Pan's Shadow Nightlight / by Busy Mom's Helper #SleepAligned #Ad

I love that even if you turn OFF all the lamps at night, it REALLY looks like a shadow still! Sorry it’s blurry – I had to take this when my kiddos were asleep and didn’t want to wake them up.

GE Align™ also sells AM LED Light Bulbs, which help promote the body’s natural wake cycle – also available on Amazon.com! Be sure to check out more great lighting options at http://cbi.as/56dh. I’d love to hear your favorite!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Playhouse Shellraiser

April 4, 2015 by Kelly Dedeaux

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Playhouse Shellraiser / by Busy Mom's Helper @modernmasters

I received free paint from Modern Masters to assist with this post. All opinions and ideas are my own.

As we’re remodeling the kids’ playroom to be totally Ninja Turtle themed, we wanted a fun little area for them to play in…like a hut, only sticking to our theme. That’s when the fun idea came that we should build them the Shellraiser – the turtle’s fully-loaded, radical subway car turned van. There was a LOT we learned along the way, so get ready to hear our Do’s and Don’ts of making your own Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Playhouse ‘Shellraiser’!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Playhouse Shellraiser / by Busy Mom's Helper @modernmasters

When we started on this project, I knew I wanted to do a few EXTRA things to really make it seem more like the Shellraiser on the show. A tube along the front bumper? Check! Graffiti-like designs on the side? Done! And, of course, fabulous metallic paints to give it that ‘shine’? Easy, thanks to Modern Masters!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Playhouse Shellraiser / by Busy Mom's Helper @modernmasters

I was able to find the perfect colors for their playhouse:

  • Plum Shade
  • Antique Bronze
  • Black Pearl
  • Hunter Green Shade

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Playhouse Shellraiser / by Busy Mom's Helper @modernmasters

First, we got TWO large pieces of wood panel. Our finished Shellraiser measures 8 feet one on side and 6 feet in the front. We cut our boards to these dimensions, then cut out the door. Hubby marked where we wanted it, drilled two holes in the top corners, then used a saw for the straight lines. Don’t forget to sand it, making it more safe and ouchy-free for the kids!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Playhouse Shellraiser / by Busy Mom's Helper @modernmasters

Then I used my awesome paints to design the wood planks. Since most of it is ‘roughly’ painted and such on the show, I tried to stick to that and not let my OCD get in the way. I loved doing the ‘graffiti’ side of it! Just do a a few different layers/designs of the paints!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Playhouse Shellraiser / by Busy Mom's Helper @modernmasters

I loved how thick and ‘creamy’ the paints were, and they gave it the perfect metallic shine for a ‘subway car’!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Playhouse Shellraiser / by Busy Mom's Helper @modernmasters

Once the painting’s all done, we got to work assembling the playhouse! We used 2x4s against the wall for support. Measure out to where your wood planks will go, then place the 2×4 right inside. Try extra hard to get a stud behind your boards, since this will really help secure everything. Nail or screw your front wood board (our shortest, so easiest to work with first) to the 2×4 on the wall, then use a 2×2 at the ‘corner’. Use lots of nails/screws – you want it secure!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Playhouse Shellraiser / by Busy Mom's Helper @modernmasters

Next, attach your bigger wood board to the other 2×4, then to the same 2×2. Again, lots of nails/screws!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Playhouse Shellraiser / by Busy Mom's Helper @modernmasters

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Playhouse Shellraiser / by Busy Mom's Helper @modernmasters

Along the top of your 2x4s and 2×2, attach more 2x2s (one on the side, one on the front). This is what you’ll attach your ‘roof’ to! We didn’t cover the entire roof, of course, just made a metal ‘edge’ to look like it. Although we used metal ducting – I DO NOT recommend you do that! It was a huge pain, and didn’t get the look I was aiming for. If you really want to use metal, use metal sheeting. If I do this again/over, I’d just find a shiny fabric 🙂

We flattened our duct, then used duct tape for ALL the edges. Our kids are playing with this, so we wanted it as safe/smooth as possible! We used screws to attach it to the top of the wood boards, then folded it up over the top 2x2s. Once all the pieces were attached, we also duct taped the seams, just to be safe.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Playhouse Shellraiser / by Busy Mom's Helper @modernmasters

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Playhouse Shellraiser / by Busy Mom's Helper @modernmasters

I had a tube packaging thing leftover from a delivery, so painted that a metallic silver and duct taped it along the front to match the turtle’s bumper!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Playhouse Shellraiser / by Busy Mom's Helper @modernmasters

After it was all done, we got some foam rolls (like the kind you can grab for A/C units and such) and attached it to the door openings – this way if they bonk going in/out of the playhouse, it’s soft and padded for them. Hubby’s idea – yes, he’s awesome! (foam not shown)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Playhouse Shellraiser / by Busy Mom's Helper @modernmasters

So grab some metallic paints, wood and tools, and build your kids their very own Ninja Turtle Playhouse ‘Shellraiser’ style!

DIY Avengers Letters

March 30, 2015 by Kelly Dedeaux

DIY Avenger Letters / by Busy Mom's Helper

Our superhero-obsessed family has been not-so-patiently waiting for the new Avengers movie coming out this year. Although we aren’t sure if we’ll be able to let the younger kids watch it, they love the trailers, and know their heros almost TOO well from the cartoon! For some themed fun, we made these neat DIY Avengers Letters of their favorites!

DIY Avenger Letters / by Busy Mom's Helper

It’s so funny, because each of our family has THEIR character. I’m Wasp (in the cartoon, hasn’t been in the movies, yet), Hubby is Ant Man (can’t wait for that movie!) and the kids are Black Widow, Captain America, Iron Man and Hulk! If any of our friends/relatives call them the wrong hero, they’re sure quick to correct them. Little nutty kiddos!

DIY Avenger Letters / by Busy Mom's Helper

I love what an easy little craft this turned out to be, and totally budget friendly. You can switch it up to match YOUR kids favorite characters….do just their initial, like I did, or spell out their names!

Supplies

  • Wood block letters
  • Paints
  • Paint brushes
  • May need a black sharpie/pen

DIY Avenger Letters / by Busy Mom's Helper

Directions – What I Did

  • Black Widow: paint a red base coat, allowing to dry. Don’t forget the edges! Add a black angle facing inside on both sides…creating a red shaped hourglass in the center.
  • Hulk: paint a green base coat, allowing to dry. Add some black ‘hair’ along the top edge. Use purple for his ‘pants’, making the bottom a little jagged. If you want, you can use a black sharpie pen to draw the little drawstring along the waistline of his pants.

DIY Avenger Letters / by Busy Mom's Helper

  •  Iron Man: paint a red base, allowing to dry. Add some gold (or yellow) trim to the sides and maybe the bottom. Add an Iron Man face shape at the top with the gold. Add little white box eyes on the mask, then use a black sharpie pen to draw out the mouth shape.
  • Captain America: paint a blue base, allowing to dry. Do a strip of red along the bottom, then somewhere in the middle do white/red stripes. Add a white ‘A’ for some fun!

What Avenger hero would YOU choose to do?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Wall Art

March 28, 2015 by Kelly Dedeaux

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Wall Art / by Busy Mom's Helper

If you’re a mom of young boys, I’d dare guess that they love Ninja Turtles. My three boys (and even my girl) are obsessed with them! That’s why we chose that for our playroom remodel theme, and it’s coming right along now that I’ve added this Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Wall Art!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Wall Art / by Busy Mom's Helper

There’s going to be a lot of Ninja Turtle stuff going on, so I wanted this art to be a little less detailed (no eyes) and fun. The boys knew EXACTLY who each of the canvas’ represented, then the PIZZA made it even more ‘rad’, as Mikey would say!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Wall Art / by Busy Mom's Helper

Supplies

  • 4 Canvas Wraps
  • Paint: green, red, orange, blue, purple, white, brown
  • Paint brushes/etc.
  • Letters: P – I – Z – Z – A
  • Thin wood board, for mounting (painted color of choice – I did grey metallic)
  • Hot glue gun/glue
  • Nails/hammer

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Wall Art / by Busy Mom's Helper

Directions

  1. Paint your canvases all green, allowing to dry. Use a piece of straight cardboard (or similar straight edged item) to help you do your mask lines – then do one of each: blue, orange, red, and purple. Allow to dry completely. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Wall Art / by Busy Mom's Helper Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Wall Art / by Busy Mom's Helper
  2. Paint your PIZZA letters, allowing to dry. Use hot glue to attach your letters to a thin board (this is how you’ll mount them to the wall). Let the glue dry completely. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Wall Art / by Busy Mom's Helper
  3. Use nails to attach your board to the wall. Use a nail for each canvas to hang those, also. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Wall Art / by Busy Mom's Helper Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Wall Art / by Busy Mom's Helper

That’s it! Now you’ve got an awesome Ninja Turtle wall display!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Wall Art / by Busy Mom's Helper

We’ve got a TON more exciting plans for our playroom remodel, and can’t wait to share them all with you! A super fun themed playhouse (clue: not actually a ‘house’!) is coming up in the next week, so be sure to check back!

DIY Big Hero 6 Shirts

December 24, 2020 by Kelly Dedeaux

DIY Big Hero 6 Shirts

If you know my family at all, you know we’re major superhero fans. When Big Hero 6 hit theaters, it wasn’t even a question if we were going to see it or not! Of course we loved it, with all the comedy, emotion and bad-guy-getting. What better way to show our love than with these DIY Big Hero 6 Shirts?!

Contains affiliate links that support this blog at no extra cost to you. See our disclosure for more info.

I’ve been wanting to do this shirts for quite awhile now, especially before our Big Hero 6 Party, but as always, time got away from me and I’m finally getting around to this weeks later. Better than never, right?! I’m planning to take them on our Disneyland Vacation this October, so we can share our hero-loving at the parks! Want to join in the fun? Be sure to visit the folks at Get Away Today to plan your trip with the best deals – use Promo Code: BusyMomsHelper for $10 off your package!

One of the great things about my boys being so close in age (well, the twins that’s a given, but even Hulk is less than 18 months younger) is that their clothes are pretty much the same size. This means they can switch these shirts with each other to try out every character! Woot woot!

You can totally customize these shirts however you want with different colors, characters, add names, whatever you want. That’s the fun of it! For now we just wanted sparkly silhouettes of our favorites, and I’m thrilled with how they turned out!

Supplies

  • Shirt
  • Fabric Paint
  • Piece of Cardboard
  • Freezer Paper
  • Scissors/Xacto Knife
  • Iron
  • Sponge Brush
  • Sparkles/Glitter
  • Stencils (printables below)

DIY Big Hero 6 Shirt / by Busy Mom's Helper

Note: the printables provided are about 4″ in width (various height) and are the sizes shown in our shirt pictures.

Directions

  1. Print off one (or all) of these sheets for your pattern: Page 1 (Baymax, Go Go & Honey Lemon) Page 2 (Fred, Hiro & Wasabi)
  2. Trace your character onto the DULL (not shiny) side of your freezer paper. Using scissors or an Xacto knife, carefully cut out your design…this will be your stencil! If you want, there are a few INSIDE pieces (like Hiro’s arm, Honey Lemon’s bag hole, etc.) for some of them that you can keep and use while you’re painting. I chose not to for these ones. DIY Big Hero 6 Shirt / by Busy Mom's Helper
  3. Stick your piece of cardboard inside your shirt under where your stencil will go, to prevent the paint from leaking through to the other side. DIY Big Hero 6 Shirt / by Busy Mom's Helper Place your stencil on your shirt exactly where you want it with the SHINY side down. Iron your stencil flat, especially the funny stick-up points and edges.
  4. Now use your sponge brush to lightly dab the paint onto your shirt. Don’t try to do too much paint at a time; instead do two or three (or more, whatever) coats.
  5. Let the paint dry most of the way between coats. I ended up doing 3… DIY Big Hero 6 Shirt / by Busy Mom's Helper …then after the 3rd coat (before it dries) I sprinkled on the glitter WITH THE STENCIL STILL ON! I then let it dry for a few minutes, then carefully pull up the freezer paper. You can use your scissor tips or knife to pull up those tiny pieces if you used them. DIY Big Hero 6 Shirt / by Busy Mom's Helper

Now check out the fabulousness of these shirts!!!

Yes, that’s my smokin’ hot hubby! Yes, you’re allowed to be jealous 😉 He’s also starting up a blog, so stay tuned for TheNerdDad.com!
