Household Safety Concern I Didn’t Know About

April 10, 2020 by Kelly Dedeaux

Household Safety Concern I Didn't Know About #CordlessForKids #IC #AD

This post was sponsored by Window Covering Safety Council as part of an Influencer Activation for Influence Central and all opinions expressed in my post are my own. #CordlessForKids #IC

As parents, it’s our main job to keep our family safe the best we can. Having helped my mom with her in-home daycare for many years, I already knew of many potential dangers when I became a mom. There’s still some that I didn’t learn about until later, though, and have had to adjust to keep my kids as safe as possible. One Household Safety Concern I Didn’t Know About until after having kids was cords on blinds – that was a big change we had to make!

It’s so easy to take care of the ‘larger’, more apparent items in your home when you have kids – baby gates on the stairs, outlet covers, knives put up high, those ‘kid leashes’ to help avoid getting lost or run away, etc. There’s a TON when you start to list them out! Until a few years into parenthood, I didn’t even think of the danger posed by corded blinds, and we all know that kids + cords do NOT mix!

Sadly, there’s plenty of stories out there of children who accidentally were strangled by random hanging items – be it cords, belts or similar. This is why it’s super important to use cordless window coverings and blinds in homes with young kids OR to use ones that have the cords inaccessible. I’d even go as far as to say that if you don’t have kids but do have pets, make sure either the cords are high enough your furry little ones don’t get tangled accidentally while playing or that you go with the cordless/inaccessible cords.

PSA: Only Use Cordless Window Coverings with Young Children from Window Covering Safety Council on Vimeo.

This is our first full week in our ‘new’ house – and it’s the first house we’ve owned that wasn’t actually NEW which meant we didn’t get to pick out the blinds ourselves to ensure they were safe. We’re learning all sorts household safety concerns with a 20-year-old house versus a newly built one, a big one being we need to check all the blinds, shades and window covers for cords.

Older window products with cords were a lot more common in the past, so I already am planning to switch some of the older corded ones with today’s safer products ASAP. If you’re not sure which items are the safer choice, just keep an eye out for the Best for Kids™ certification label while shopping in stores or online – it makes it simple to identify which products are the better choice for homes with young children.

Of course, there’s some household ‘dangers’ that we can’t always protect our kiddos from – such as that naptime they try so hard to put off!

Whether you’re also moving into a ‘new’ house, or just like refreshing your home for Springtime, it’s a great time to take some safety precautions that may be overlooked during the busy-ness of the rest of the year. You can even check out the Window Covering Safety Council on Facebook for more info to help you get your household safety concerns put to rest.

What household safety concerns were your biggest surprise?

When You’re Living Between Moves

April 10, 2020 by Kelly Dedeaux

When You're Living Between Moves

We received a complimentary stay to facilitate this post. All opinions are mine alone. #myESA

As many of you know, the past two months have been a chaotic mess of moving from one house in a hurry, finding a new house at the last minute because our original pick fell through, then having almost a week when we were between houses before we could move in. So what do you do when you’re living between moves? Find a fantastic home-away-from-home, of course!

Seriously, I never want to deal with all the rushed packing and storage, extreme late nights to get it all done in time, or the emotional toll this has been on is. That being said, last week when we were between houses went much more smoothly than I could have imagined being temporarily homeless! Luckily, we were able to get a 2-bedroom suite at a local Extended Stay America that worked perfectly for our big family!

The kids weren’t quite sure at first about staying at a hotel for that long while still doing school, but as soon as we came in they LOVED it and were really excited. The great thing about an Extended Stay America is that the rooms come with kitchens, so you can still make meals as needed. This was perfect for the early morning breakfasts before school, then making the kids a tasty dinner after all the kids’ activities. It was also a great benefit because we had a place to store our fridge items while our own fridge was in storage!

We didn’t have to bring our own dishes, as they supplied what we needed – just let them know, and the friendly desk staff will help you out. One bathroom was a little weird for our family of 7, but it worked out fine for the week. It was a good size, plus had plenty of storage for our stuff. They had no problem supplying all the towels we needed, either.

The front room had TWO queen/full sized sofa beds, which our girls enjoyed. Keeping them separate form their brothers was a definite sanity-saver, since they’re ‘too cool’ to share with their younger siblings apparently! They fold up nice and easy, leaving it a great family room with little table and TV.

Behind that was a table that made it great for me working during the day – blogging never sleeps, after all! The free wi-fi was a blessing, and during the day the speed was just fine.

To store their stuff was a linen closet in the hall as well…

The smaller of the bedrooms, which the 3 boys shared, was to the side and had a closet that fit all their stuff.

The master room was in the back of the hallway, with a comfy bed and TV. The closet was surprisingly HUGE, which was perfect as we did have several pieces of luggage and other things we didn’t want in storage while we between houses.

The little bonuses made a huge difference while between moves…

Such as the goodies on the bed, plus a welcome card…

…and soaps, shampoo and dish detergent to make your stay feel right at home.

For how hectic the past several weeks have been, I’m so grateful that our time at Extended Stay America while between moves took some of the stress and chaos off of our family. It was like a wonderful mini vacation between everything, and helped us all unwind, relax and enjoy our time a bit more!

How do you deal with being between moves?

And if you’re not quite sure how to get started with this amazing life hack for cooking, be sure to check out Chef Ryan Scott’s 10-part series to get you all set to make one pot cooking a helpful part of your life!

One Pot Cooking: a Busy Mom's Best Friend! #ad #onepotcooking Check out chef Ryan Scott's course "One Pot Cooking" on Craftsy for his 10-part online video series! #cooking #easymeals #slowcooker #sheetpan #food #recipes

It’s absolutely no secret that I completely LOVE one pot meals – whether it’s my slow cooker, pot or sheet pan – because it’s often the only way my family will get a full meal that’s tasty and healthy with my crazy schedule. As I write this, I can smell the amazing seasoned pork with potatoes I have cooking in my slow cooker right on the counter in our hotel room, and am grateful for such a great invention 🙂

Some of us have been relying on one pot cooking for years and consider ourselves pros (for the record, I’m definitely not a pro yet!), while others aren’t quite sure how to make anything really great without some guidance. If you’re in the latter group, you’ll be thrilled to hear that Craftsy and TODAY Food have launched a new digital cooking series called “One Pot Cooking” featuring Ryan Scott, an Emmy-award winning chef, as well as NBC News weather anchor Dylan Dreyer. This online class is a LIFESAVER for us busy moms!

What is this “One Pot Cooking” series, you ask?

It’s a 10-part series (online, making it super convenient) that offers a fresh perspective to making healthy and delicious one pot meals. That means ONE cooking piece – from slow cooker (my personal fav), to frying pan, to sheet pan and more. This is great, because it means you don’t get stuck with ONE style or way to do things!

Check out the trailer to see some of the tastiness in store:

Don’t you think chef Ryan Scott and Dylan are super fun?! And did you notice – it’s not JUST great dinners like lasagna or salmon, but there was also dessert (pineapple upside-down cake, anyone?) and I even saw what appears to be a french toast with fresh fruit. Yum!

I’m eager to check out “One Pot Cooking” and really take my easy meals to a whole new level! If you’re wanting to get a ‘taste’ for it, too, it’s available on Craftsy for a one-time fee of just $40 (for the whole 10-part series!).

Or if you’re a foodie who wants even more, you can sign up for Craftsy Unlimited, Craftsy’s video subscription service, and get a free trial of “One Pot Cooking” as well as unlimited PREMIUM access to thousands of hours of exclusive video tutorials and classes – and it’s just $14.99/month or $120 for an annual subscription (that comes out to just $10/month – wow!)

You can find more details on Craftsy.com and be sure to enjoy all the deliciousness and fun they have to offer!

Check out these other tips that chef Ryan Scott has for busy moms!

Q: What are your top five tips for moms on-the-go who want to make creative weeknight meals?

  1. Have fun
  2. Be creative!
  3. Know how to use your kitchen staples
  4. Utilize leftovers
  5. Make sauces in batches that are universal and delicious

What are three kitchen must-haves for easy to make recipes?

  • Slow cookers are great
  • One pan meals are my favorite you. There are many vessels that can be used as your “one pan” from cast iron skillets, to roasting pans, to sheet pans, they all work for different uses!
  • A well stocked pantry is essential to making easy recipes. Use ingredients that are versatile and shelf friendly.

What can viewers expect from your “One-Pot Cooking” class on Craftsy?

My crash course on how to make the easiest MEALS. Yes full meals!

Can one-pot cooking also be healthy? If so, how?

Absolutely! I find people only consider one-pot meals as crock pots or slow cookers which is not true. A one pot meal is simply using one vessel to cook your food. Use good nutritional ingredients and don’t go crazy with unhealthy ingredients.

What’s YOUR favorite one pot recipe?

Fearless Learning Support at Explore Horizons

Fearless Learning Support at Explore Horizons

Thank you to Explore Horizons for partnering with us on this post! #fearlesslearning #fearlesswriter #fearlesstesttaker #fearlessmath

Often when people hear ‘tutoring’, they think of help for those falling behind or struggling with certain aspects of their education. I’ll admit that I used to think that way, too! Since letting all of my kids try out the program available at Explore Horizons, it’s changed my perspective. I’ve learned that children of ANY level or ability can really benefit from Fearless Learning Support at Explore Horizons – whether it’s to catch up, stay strong or even get ahead!

With five kiddos, we have varying levels of learning – they each have their own strengths and weaknesses, and don’t all learn the exact same way. This can be hard to meet ALL their needs in a typical school setting, because they need more individualized help to really assist with their learning. That’s one reason I’ve loved the past few weeks at Explore Horizons, because their method is a ‘whole child’ approach. They provide tutoring for kids of all abilities in the Pre-K through 8th grades in math, reading and writing that’s engaging to the kids, making them actually EXCITED to learn.  Every child receives a plan customized to their own individual needs, really increasing their likelihood of success. And when a child truly feels confident that they can succeed, that’s when they can truly conquer anything. It’s an amazing compliment to a school education, and can really give them a stronger foundation for success.

So how does this work, you may be asking? First, Explore Horizons has several locations available around the Dallas-Fort Worth area – so go to their site and locate the one nearest you. Contact them to schedule your child’s evaluation, which helps them put together a plan that will best assist and support your child’s educational needs. Once the plan is in place, they’ll explain how the sessions and such work. Basically, with the monthly fee you receive:

  • Up to two tutoring sessions per week, 75 minutes each
  • Professional educators
  • Individually tailored tutoring
  • Regular one-on-one parent progress meetings
  • Open homework clinic on Wednesday evenings
  • Reserved one-on-one tutoring session per month

You’re able to drop in during their operating hours without having to pre-book (super convenient if you don’t know you’re exact schedule in advance – just decide the day of!). Their customized plans align to your school district’s curriculum, and they offer preparation for test taking. With the STARR tests coming up, I loved being able to take my 4th grader to those STARR prep sessions for a little extra confidence and support for her! Oh, and they offer ne thing that would’ve helped ME a ton in my youth – handwriting development help!

Fearless Learning Support at Explore Horizons / Engaging & customized tutoring help in the Dallas-Fort Worth Area #AD #fearlesslearning #fearlesswriter #fearlesstesttaker #fearlessmath

I was nervous at first that my kids would be annoyed when I told them they were going to be attending a tutoring session – and they were, until they got there. They absolutely LOVED the staff, who were so friendly and knowledgeable (and patient – a huge benefit when working on learning) and the learning program is actually fun for the kids, so they look forward to attending each week. Some of my kids need a bit of extra help to catch up to their current level, while a few are ready to advance more but don’t receive that time or attention in school. Explore Horizons was perfect for this, because they cater it to that child’s particular needs and levels. It’s NOT just for kids who need extra help – my more advanced kids loved being able to work on more challenging things above their ‘normal’ grade, and it helped them feel more motivated to learn.

Fearless Learning Support at Explore Horizons / Engaging & customized tutoring help in the Dallas-Fort Worth Area #AD #fearlesslearning #fearlesswriter #fearlesstesttaker #fearlessmath

A typical session for us – we arrive and are greeted by the awesome staff. They call my kiddos ‘the clan’ because it’s FIVE of them 🙂 My kids write their name and arrival time on the sign-in sheet, and I’m told what time about they’ll be done. It’s typically 75 minutes long. They get their books, are assigned a station, and get working on their goals for that day with the assistance of the staff. Each station has up to six kids with one tutor helping just those kids – I love the smaller sizes, so they can really get the help, support and attention they need! After working their time, they have a ‘recharge station’ where they can play some games and have a little bit of earned fun. At the end, they’re given up to 4 lizard cards (depending on how many they earned for how well they did their goals for the day), and told how many spaces to move their name on the lizard chart – more on those rewards later though! Then they’re released to me at pick-up, and I’m updated of how each child did that day. I love the great communication between their team and us as parents – it takes a village, that’s for sure!

When kids feel like they’re able to learn – and enjoy it – a whole new world opens up and they really up their effort. I love how excited they are when they understand something new, or overcome something that they were struggling with before! That’s one thing that Explore Horizons believes in – creating a generation of fearless learners.

You’ll be kept updated of their progress each session, since when you pick them up one of their awesome staff lets you know what they worked on, what they may have struggled with a bit, and what they did amazing on (whether it’s asking for help, learning a new concept, or figuring out a new way to work a problem). The kids’ goals are clear from the start of each session, so they know what to work on. During your monthly progress meetings, they’ll give you a DETAILED report of how they’re doing, including what level they’re working at and with what average score and mastery scores. For example, I knew Black Widow was reading at a higher level than her grade, but didn’t realize she was doing really well in reading AND math at a whole grade level above where she’s at!

Fearless Learning Support at Explore Horizons / Engaging & customized tutoring help in the Dallas-Fort Worth Area #AD #fearlesslearning #fearlesswriter #fearlesstesttaker #fearlessmath

Their engaging program helps keep track of where the kids are at, and adjusts as needed. One of my twins is a bit lower in reading than his ‘actual grade level’ is, so the program adjusted to fit that AND adjusted to ensure that his math was where HE needed it, not where the grade level said. It’s great knowing that not only is the staff customizing their tutoring session, but the program they’re working on will cater to their individual needs, as well.

They also have a reward system – because we know kids LOVE rewards – in which they earn ‘lizard cards’. The kids get a kick out of these fun cards, which they can collect. They also move up the lizard chart to earn certificates, and there’s a prize shop where they can earn enough cards to ‘buy’ a cool prize. They’re so excited for it, and it gives them even more encouragement and motivation to do their best!

American Girl Doll: Bringing Sisters Together

April 10, 2020 by Kelly Dedeaux

American Girl Doll: Bringing Sisters Together #partner #AGDallas #CharacterCounts

Thank you American Girl for sponsoring our special visit to your Dallas location! #CharacterCounts #AGDallas

As many of you know, we adopted one of my girls last year – it’s been a whirlwind, that’s for sure, but has been wonderful completing our family. One thing that’s been a bit challenging is for my two girls to really bond. They’re only about 9 months apart, but having not grown up together or even known each other for that long, the whole sister thing is a work in progress. Remembering how special it was to bond with my best friend growing up with American Girl Doll, I thought it’d be perfect for bringing sisters together – and the results were everything I hoped!

Songbird (my new daughter) has told us before that she did have an American Girl doll before she came to us, but sadly it was lost quite some time ago. So many things she had when younger are no longer here, and it seemed that doll was truly missed. Black Widow (my other daughter) has always asked for a doll of her own, getting all bright eyed when we’d go to one of their stores just to look around.

A bit ago we had a ‘girl date’ with just the two of them and me, and we went to the Galleria Dallas mall – first browsing around, grabbing a treat, and letting them look through clothes. The plan was to then go ‘window shop’ at the American Girl Doll store, but when we got there I surprised them by letting them know they’d each get to pick out their own, special doll. They were THRILLED, to say the least! Black Widow was about to cry, she was so excited 🙂

When my friend, Val, and I were about my daughters’ ages, we loved playing with our American Girl Dolls – I had Samantha and she had Josefina. We would have fun switching their outfits, doing their hair in various styles, and not only enjoying their individual stories but also combining them a bit to create a new world. My thought was, if that was a good way to bond with my friend, why couldn’t it do the same for my girls?

Since there’s a LOT more options than when I was younger, one of their awesome staff, Tiffany, was extremely helpful with showing us all the different dolls, telling us their stories, and showing us around the store – including the fun cafe and salon upstairs! Just the browsing and learning starting making connections for the girls – what they both liked, the excitement in seeing the accessories and clothes, and just spending that quality time over a shared interest.

After considering their many beautiful and fun choices – and coming close to selecting the Girl of the Year (Luciana Vega, who’s brilliant and aspires to be an astronaut) or Tenney Grant (a talented musician) – the both finally decided that their own Truly Me doll.

Here’s what was really special – they both picked one that looked similar to them, and just like my girls, the dolls may not be exactly the same, but definitely look like sisters. It was such a fun connection for them to make, celebrating their differences but also appreciating their similarities!

Once we got home with their new special friends, they both had a great time dressing their dolls, brushing their hair, and even sharing with each other the different outfits the picked out. I’ll admit, they don’t often play well together yet – but that day was amazing and started growing not only a FRIENDSHIP between my girls, but growing that sisterly bond. It made my mommy heart so grateful and happy!

They’ve since been talking about going in on different outfits, play sets or accessories together for their dolls, so I know that it’s truly been a great way to bring them closer together. They also want to save up to visit the American Girl Doll salon and cafe one time as another ‘girl date’, which will be yet another opportunity for them to make happy memories together as sisters. I love it!

If you or your child had/has an American Girl, which one is it?

Spring Cleaning for a Move

March 6, 2018 by Kelly Dedeaux

Spring Cleaning for a Move / get our house clean and ready for moving this Spring #AD #SwifferFanatic

I’m excited to share this spring cleaning post, sponsored by Swiffer #SwifferFanatic

I have no idea how the whole ‘spring cleaning’ thing started, but I’ve always loved the idea of doing a major deep clean and organizing of my home at a regular-ish time each year. That way I know it’ll get done, and it makes our house feel fresh for the coming seasons. On a whole extra note, Spring Cleaning for a Move not only gets that job done, but also helps save time and hassle later when you’re switching houses!

Spring Cleaning for a Move / get our house clean and ready for moving this Spring #AD #SwifferFanatic

I’ve shared some of my tips for Spring cleaning before, and today I’m sharing a few more – plus how it’s a great time when you’re also planning a move. As many of you know, we recently put our house on market to down-size a bit. We love our current house, but it’s just TOO big and pricey for us to stay in. So part of the preparation before we sell and move, is to purge a bunch of unnecessary stuff. It’s far too easy to collect ‘stuff’ when you have a big house, so by going smaller we can declutter.

The first step to decluttering for your Spring cleaning is to go through all the obvious places – closets, pantries, under stairs, shelves, drawers etc. Sort through your clothes and decor, your dishes, even the tools and supplies in the garage. Decide what you really need/want to keep, and what would be best to get rid of. Make a bag or box (or multiple, if you’re really trying to get rid of a bunch of things) for donations and also for garbage/recycling.

Spring Cleaning for a Move / get our house clean and ready for moving this Spring #AD #SwifferFanatic

Now check the less obvious spots – in couch cushions, up high on the kitchen cabinets, and the like. Really go through and do a good check for any place items may have been shoved or collected. After that, you should have your excess or no-longer-needed items ready for either disposal or donating.

Spring Cleaning for a Move / get our house clean and ready for moving this Spring #AD #SwifferFanatic

You’re now ready to start your deep cleaning – but don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be a huge project! I kind of make a list of everything that needs to be done, then check off things one room at a time so I don’t lose track of where I left off in case I’m interrupted.

Some of my Spring Cleaning items are:

  • Dust everywhere – don’t forget those hard to reach places like ceiling fans, high ledges, light fixtures and blinds. I love using my Swiffer® Dusters™ (my kids also LOVE cleaning with this, so that’s a bonus for me!) because they easily trap the dust, dirt and other fluff that accumulates everywhere. Spring Cleaning for a Move / get our house clean and ready for moving this Spring #AD #SwifferFanatic
  • Clean the windows – inside and out
  • Wipe the baseboards well – those can sure get icky!
  • Sweep all your non-carpet areas – our Swiffer® Sweep + Vac™ is my hubby’s favorite, while I’m more into the Swiffer® Sweeper X-Large™. Either one is great, as they do excellent at collecting the junk on our floors – including the ridiculous amounts of dog hair! Spring Cleaning for a Move / get our house clean and ready for moving this Spring #AD #SwifferFanatic
  • Clean the mirrors, counters, sinks, toilets and showers in the bathrooms
  • Clean the counters and sink in the kitchen
  • Clean the stove, oven and microwave. Wipe off and/or clean the dishwasher, as well
  • Vacuum all carpeted areas – don’t forget the edges really well, too, since these can often be skipped over during normal vacuuming jobs
  • Wash all bedding, towels, wash clothes, etc. – I know this gets done regularly, but I like having a time when EVERYTHING in the house is clean at once 🙂
  • Mop all non-carpeted areas – I’ve used the Swiffer® WetJet™ Mop since I was younger at my parent’s house, and now rely on it for my own home. For our wood floors, the Swiffer® WetJet™ Mop Wood Floor is excellent for our nice wood floors in our office and family rooms. Spring Cleaning for a Move / get our house clean and ready for moving this Spring #AD #SwifferFanatic
  • We also organize the garage, and give it a nice sweep
  • To top it off, we wipe off all doorknobs and light switches (because you know those collect germs like crazy)

It may seem like a LOT, but it’s actually not that much for an extreme deep clean once or twice a year – especially with the right tools to help you get the job done, as well as a family to help with all the jobs! Adding in the decluttering aspect is excellent for if you’re preparing to move because it 1) makes yours house appear nicer for selling, 2) makes cleaning easier, 3) gets rid of stuff so you have less unnecessary stuff to move and 4) makes stuff more organized so packing is easier when moving day arrives.

Mornings Saved with School Breakfast

Mornings Saved with School Breakfast

This post is sponsored by the School Nutrition Associated for National School Breakfast Week. #NSBW18 #SchoolBreakfast #TrayTalk

I’m sure I’ve mentioned a time or two (or dozen) before how much I dislike mornings. It’s such a mad rush to get everyone up, ready and out the door – and we can just hope that nobody forgot something important! Unfortunately, for busy families it means not having time for a good breakfast, even though it’s one of the most important meals of the day. Luckily, mornings are saved with school breakfast – and this week we’re celebrating with National School Breakfast Week!

At our school, I know so many kids who rely on the school breakfast because it’s just not available at home – either due to time, finances or whatever reason. When I walk in the doors every morning with my kiddos in tow, we walk right past the lunchroom that’s bustling with kids enjoying a good start to the day. Plus, it’s a great time for them to chat with friends and prepare for the day ahead together! It’s also a relief to parents, knowing that if they just can’t make breakfast or lunch every day, their kids will still have a great option.

I’m thrilled that some important changes have been made to the school menus in the past decade – with more whole grains, fresh fruit and veggies, less sodium and sugar, and local ingredients or from scratch cooking when available. I know all you fellow busy moms understand the stress of making sure our kiddos eat more healthy – especially with so much junk around – so it means a lot to me as a parent to know that the offerings are better for them than when I was younger.

In fact, research shows that kids who participate in the school breakfast programs tend to eat more fruits, drink more milk and have a wider variety of foods than those who don’t eat breakfast. About 14 million kids eat school breakfast every school day – so that’s a lot of little ones getting better nutrition in their tummies!

Mornings Saved by School Breakfast - celebrate National School Breakfast Week with us March 5th-9th 2018! #AD #NSBW18 #SchoolBreakfast #TrayTalk

I’ll fully admit that I HAVE to have breakfast every day – without it, I’m lethargic and honestly a total grump. I don’t mean to be, but I just can’t function well without starting my day with a good meal – and I know growing kids need it even more! It not only helps their mood and healthy weight, but students who eat breakfast are more likely to score higher on standardized tests, reach higher levels in math and reading, are able to concentrate and remember better, and be more alert throughout the day. YAY!

And did you know that some schools are adding Breakfast in the Classroom, Second Chance Breakfast, Grab and Go Breakfast and others? It’s their way to ensure every child has access to a healthy breakfast before school begins – because it’s heartbreaking how many little kiddos wouldn’t have breakfast at all if their school didn’t offer one!

So to celebrate National School Breakfast Week March 5th-9th this year, there’s going to be daily activities, new healthy menu items and awesome breakfast programs being implemented in school – just check out the TrayTalk.org blog and the Tray Talk Facebook page to join in on the fun! There you’ll also find some handy resources for parents or guardians, with things such as interviews and stories from school cafeterias and nutrition experts.

Here’s some extra fun for your kiddos as well – some cool school breakfast themed coloring sheets! Just go here and print or download 🙂

You can even get really playful with some photo prop printables – get the kids, classmates, teachers and – heck, even the principal to join in on this clever fun. I call this one “my banana!” 😉

Just print them onto cardstock, cut them out and either hold them up just like that or attach them to a craft stick or something. These sure made for some awesome pictures to celebrate National School Breakfast Week!

How to Print on Burlap & Valentine Date Invitation Printable

February 2, 2018 by Kelly Dedeaux

How to Print on Burlap & Valentine Date Invitation Printable #ad #burlapfabric #craft #diy #printable #valentines

This post was sponsored by BurlapFabric.com – as always, all opinions and ideas are our own.

I don’t know about you, but I didn’t always like burlap. In my mind, it was always a bland brown color that had fraying edges that were a mess, and you couldn’t do much with it at all. Wow, that’s sure changed! Now you can get burlap in several different colors, shapes, styles. You can get it as a napkin, a bag, ribbon, banners and so much more. I love the options! I also love that I now know how How to Print on Burlap & I’m sharing a fun Valentine Date Invitation Printable for y’all to use this month!

How to Print on Burlap & Valentine Date Invitation Printable #ad #burlapfabric #craft #diy #printable #valentinesIsn’t this banner super fun? I thought it’d be unique to not only ‘invite’ my hubby to be my Valentine date, but do it by decorating with a banner covered with the invite – he’s sure to get the message that way, right? 😉

How to Print on Burlap & Valentine Date Invitation Printable #ad #burlapfabric #craft #diy #printable #valentines

I got this 12-pack of burlap banner pieces for the project, and though I was a bit nervous printing on a weird shape, it turned out really simple and no hassle at all!

How to Print on Burlap & Valentine Date Invitation Printable #ad #burlapfabric #craft #diy #printable #valentines

Supplies

  • 12-pack of burlap banner pieces
  • Printer (I used inkjet, but I’ve heard this will work on laserjet as well – but haven’t personally tried that)
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue/gun
  • Valentine Invitation Printable -click on here & the 8.5×11 will download
  • Colored Burlap Ribbon – if desired

How to Print on Burlap & Valentine Date Invitation Printable #ad #burlapfabric #craft #diy #printable #valentines

A side note – the reason I really love this burlap banner pack is that it already has a filmy backing to it. Otherwise, we’d need to do additional steps with freezer paper to create a backing for going through the printer. This worked great for me without the extra though because it was already there!

How to Print on Burlap & Valentine Date Invitation Printable #ad #burlapfabric #craft #diy #printable #valentines

Directions – Printing on the Burlap

  1. Cut just under the top folded-over area of the banner, removing the strip that holds the string – but save it, because we’ll reattach it later! Be sure to trim the edges a bit to get rid of any frays that could get caught in the printer.
  2. Do a test page on your printer to make sure you know the proper direction to load your burlap. You want it to print on the non-shiny side. We designed the file to be 8.5×11 in size, but it’s laid out so it’ll print in the bulky area of these banners, with the top at the largest width of the banner – as you can see below. After your comfortable that you know the direction to load your banner piece, place it as needed in your printer and hit print.

How to Print on Burlap & Valentine Date Invitation Printable #ad #burlapfabric #craft #diy #printable #valentines

Directions – Attaching Rope Back On

  • Use hot glue/gun to reattach the strip with the rope to the back of your banner. Don’t go very close to the sides, as you’ll need to trim a bit off so they don’t stick out.

How to Print on Burlap & Valentine Date Invitation Printable #ad #burlapfabric #craft #diy #printable #valentines

  • An easy way to trim them WITHOUT CUTTING THE ROPE is as follows:
    • Cut a little slit inwards (only on that back strip, do not cut the front triangle in any of these steps) so you can push the rope enough towards the center that it won’t get cut on the edge.
    • Cut the excess strip off, keeping the rope away from your scissors – and remember to avoid cutting the front triangle piece, you’re just cutting the excess along the edges!
    • Repeat for other side so they’re both hidden/flush with the nice triangle edges

How to Print on Burlap & Valentine Date Invitation Printable #ad #burlapfabric #craft #diy #printable #valentines

I love this little ‘invitation’ and how simple it was to print on burlap – I can see a lot of fun projects like this in the future! I also used this red burlap ribbon for some added ‘color’ and accent with my banner. I think it really brings out the red text!

How to Print on Burlap & Valentine Date Invitation Printable #ad #burlapfabric #craft #diy #printable #valentines

If you like it more simple, that’s perfectly great too – it still looks incredible, and almost makes the mustache part stand out even more which is fun 🙂

How to Print on Burlap & Valentine Date Invitation Printable #ad #burlapfabric #craft #diy #printable #valentines

Whichever way you choose, this fun Valentine date invitation is unique, simple to make and a great way to catch the invitees eyes!

How to Print on Burlap & Valentine Date Invitation Printable #ad #burlapfabric #craft #diy #printable #valentinesIf you have burlap that doesn’t already have that film layer on the back, you’ll need to add it using freezer paper and an iron, otherwise it’ll have issues printing since there’s holes/gaps in the burlap:

  1. Be sure you use freezer paper – NOT wax!
  2. Trim a piece of freezer paper so it fits your burlap shape. Trim so it fits EXACTLY – don’t forget to trim any burlap frays as well.
  3. Put the shiny side of the paper onto the ‘back’ of your burlap and use your iron to ‘stick’ the paper to the burlap.
  4. Follow the printing instructions as above – always do a test sheet to ensure you have it loaded the correct way.
  5. Once printed on, carefully peel off the freezer paper. It should come off easily, but if it’s sticking a bit too much, try rolling the burlap gently so it loosens it up more to peel off. Another option is putting it in the freezer, which seems to make the pieces unstick from each other.

What would YOU print on burlap?

Please note – printers and burlap may vary, so please make the best judgement when putting something other than paper through your printer. We’re simply sharing how we did it and what worked for us. We assume no responsibility if your printer/burlap is different and something gets ruined.

February 1, 2018 by Kelly Dedeaux

Our Disneyland Rental House / by Busy Mom's Helper

While it may come as a shock to those who know our love of everything Disney, I’ve never been on a Disney Cruise before! It’s definitely something we’ve always wanted to do, and hope to be able to experience before our kids get too much older, but it just hasn’t happened quite yet. When it does, though, it’ll be something NEW – which means lots of planning for me – YAY! While I really do enjoy planning trips, it’s a bit challenging to know everything and not get overwhelmed when it’s new. Not only is it chock-full of great tips and ideas, it’s really playful and fun. Instead of just doing a bunch of lists and spreadsheets (we’re not against these at all – you should see the amount of lists I do before a vacation!) and making your planning more tedious, this video really brings Disney to life so the whole family can begin the fun right from the start, not just when you get on the ship.

Teacher Gift Idea: Survival Kit

December 20, 2017 by Kelly Dedeaux

Teacher Gift Idea: Survival Kit - customize cheap, plain stockings to make a super EASY, cute & fun Teacher survival kit - the perfect teacher gift to get them through the year! #AD #StockedWithLove @bandaidbrand @Target

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #StockedWithLove #CollectiveBias

Why oh why do I let Christmas sneak up on me every single year? I thought I was *super* on the ball this year, having all the kids’ gifts done and wrapped shortly after Thanksgiving – but I completely forgot all their teachers! Between my five kiddos, we have 8 main school teachers (some switch half-day, so have two main teachers), plus several assistants, six dance instructors and four karate professors. Instead of blasting holiday music and curling up with some hot chocolate trying to ignore the fact I hadn’t gotten them gifts, I got creative. It’s super easy to customize cheap, plain stockings to make the perfect Teacher Gift Idea – a Survival Kit to help get them through the rest of the year!

Hover on the image below for some super easy shopping for the fun BAND-AID® Brand Adhesive Bandages holiday collection online!

Since I was extremely scrunched on time, and determined to tackle this last ‘big’ task I had before really relaxing for the holiday, I swung by Target to get everything I needed to create these fun teacher stocking gifts. While you should definitely get some fun items to stick in their stocking – like a gift card, cute mug, fun note pad or candies – be sure to stock up on stuff that are much-needed in classrooms. There’s several things that work for ANY type of teacher – be it school, dance, karate or whatever – such as packs of BAND-AID® Brand Adhesive Bandages. And guess what? Their festive BAND-AID® Brand Adhesive Bandages holiday collection is on sale in the ads during the week of 12/17! You can nab 2 for just $5, making them a very useful (aka necessary) classroom item for a great price.

Since kids have a tendency to get hurt even in the strangest of ways, any parent, teacher or instructor is smart to have BAND-AID® Brand Adhesive Bandages on-hand because they heal hurts faster and are the #1 doctor recommended brand. Target also has Paw Patrol and Star Wars BAND-AID® Brand Adhesive Bandages, which make for great stocking stuffers for the kids, so why not grab a few of those while you’re there?

Here’s some more survival kit ideas you can include:

  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Glue Sticks
  • Crayons, Markers, Pencils, Pens, etc.
  • Tissues
  • Room Scent Spray
  • Lint roller
  • Target gift card – to buy whatever else they may be needing!

Don’t forget the stuff that’s just for fun, as well!

To Customize Your Teacher Stocking

Supplies:

  • Generic Stocking in size of choice
  • Ribbon, Beads, etc.
  • Accent Decor (felt or thin wood shapes, sparkles, glitter, etc.)
  • Hot Glue/Gun

Teacher Gift Idea: Survival Kit - customize cheap, plain stockings to make a super EASY, cute & fun Teacher survival kit - the perfect teacher gift to get them through the year! #AD #StockedWithLove @bandaidbrand @Target

Directions

  1. Use hot glue to attach a ribbon or strand of beads to create a line accent, – this can work at the top, around the bottom of the ‘cuff’ of the stocking, or even all around the edges of the stocking part. I did two as a strip at the top, then cut some bead strands to ‘dangle’. Teacher Gift Idea: Survival Kit - customize cheap, plain stockings to make a super EASY, cute & fun Teacher survival kit - the perfect teacher gift to get them through the year! #AD #StockedWithLove @bandaidbrand @Target
  2. Before glueing, decide on a pattern/style you want for the stocking by laying out your accent pieces/decor. Once you’ve found the spots/pattern you want, carefully hot glue them in place. Once dry, rub a little where there’s excess hot glue sticking out to help remove those loose ‘glue strings’ that sometimes occur.
  3. Fill with teacher gift items- the fun AND the useful – and BAND-AID® Brand Adhesive Bandages.

See, it’s really easy to turn a simple, plain stocking into a personalized and fun gift packaging! You can even have your kids help pick out the decorations and design the gift, making it extra special. Just be sure to watch them with the hot glue, please!

If you have room in the stocking, you can even have your child write a few thoughtful notes or memories to stick in there as a special surprise that is sure to mean a lot to their teacher. I even put in a few from me, since I’m sure they don’t hear gratitude from the parents often enough.

Now that I’ve got gifts done for the MANY teachers in our lives, I think I’ll take this same idea and make miniature ones for people who very rarely get recognition – like the mailman or people that work the garbage trucks! It’s amazing how many people there are that have an impact on our lives – even if it’s ‘just’ delivering mail or removing our trash from the curb. I’m trying to show a little more gratitude this year, and love that I can easily do that in a fun way without taking up much of my little time. After all, the kids are out of school early Wednesday then it’s going to be a rare moment I’ll have much time at all until they go back in January  – but I’m really looking forward to all the family time! 🙂
